Circling our Humanity, Awakening unconscious biases
All of HREC’s programming is based on revealing and understanding that as human beings we all fall victim to implicit bias. If we are honest with ourselves we know exactly of our conscious biases but in many cases we are unaware of our unconscious biases that influence the decisions we make everyday. This is troubling and leads to untold acts of inequitable events, many imbued with violence.
Over 16 years HREC has developed teaching methods for every age group that helps develop an understanding of how to recognize and manage our biases as to create more caring and inclusive human beings. From teaching little ones the difference between tattling and telling to facilitating adult conversational circles that respect all voices in the room, HREC has touched hundred’s of people over the years. Teaching and learning how to converse respectfully and how listening embedded with kindness and respect is the answer, not only to addressing specific challenges, but it is the actuality of a living civility. It allows the friendship in discourse and provides safety in agreeing to disagree. HREC believes it is of the utmost importance to model and teach these important values to ourselves and to our youth.
HREC has consistently held to the belief that indifference to the oppression and exclusion of others is the sleeping giant that must be awakened and moved to action. Teaching children the difference between apathy and empathy has long been part of the HREC’s youth curriculum. And importantly, we teach, “Prejudice is learned behavior”. We learn it many times unknowingly, and youth especially so now, due to their continuous exposure to technology and social media. We, as adults MUST not only address these issues with our youth but within one another and ourselves. HREC provides teaching and learning modules that address our hearts and minds that are effective and long lasting.
Prejudice is born in ignorance. Acceptance is born in Education.
