This program focuses on building the skills of participants to interact effectively with people of different cultures. The training includes four basic components:
- Awareness of one’s own cultural worldview
- An examination of attitudes towards cultural differences
- Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews
- Cross-cultural skills
Developing cultural competence results in an ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. HREC also provides cultural competence training for healthcare providers which specifically focuses on effective communication between clinicians, patients, families and other health care providers. It also addresses the issue of healthcare disparities is across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.
